Camp Baltimore – Stevie and the Satellites

Camp Baltimore was a parody song I wrote and performed in 1992. The original song was a 1963 top 5 hit by Alan Sherman called Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh about a kid writing home from summer camp.   I thought what if Baltimore was the actual summer camp a kid from out of town would be sent too for a week during summer, what would be some of the highlights?  If you were living in Baltimore in 1992 you had Mayor Schaffer now the Governor of Maryland and things weren’t going as well for him as they were when he was mayor of Baltimore.  Baltimore County teachers were going through tough negotiations trying to earn a decent wage. The lite rail had just started running and it was constantly breaking down. Of course crime, crab cakes, snowballs, Ocean City and Natty Boh had to be part of it.  The paddle boats at the harbor were regularly being hit by real boats and Club Hippo was a hugely popular gay bar back then. Put them all together and what do you have?  A summer camp for kids called “Camp Baltimore”!! It’s the Stevie and the Satellites August song of the month.

You might remember me from my broadcasting career, namely The Rouse and Company Show. Perhaps you know me as Farmer Steve from your visits to our farm. Others may remember me from my music career and the parody songs. Oh, and I should welcome those of you who don’t have a clue who I am. I think you’ll get to know me pretty well after reading or listening to a few of my stories.

Thank you so much Steve for this site. I’ve been searching for your songs for a long time.

Would it be possible to have the Ravens song for September? I used to play it every game, a lot during the 2nd Super Bowl run, and even in the stadium for the home playoff game that year. Unfortunately the cassette didn’t survive my crafty 2 year old a decade ago. Haha. (It was well out of reach, or so I thought).

Thank you Steve for all the great memories. (And great songs that still pop in my head all the time).

The spelled out one, I believe Ravens was the title, maybe volume 7.

But I liked them all, including the Baltimore Browns one. I’d talk over Tom Davis at the beginning, replacing it with my own play-by-play of the Mile High Miracle. Haven’t heard the Play Me one in even longer, I’ll have to look for it next trip to my parents.

Thanks a lot Steve!
