By the holiday season of 1991 the once beloved Mayor of Baltimore had become, for many, the not so loved Governor of Maryland.  We took the nutty holiday song Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer and did our own version called Schaffer Got Run Over by a Reindeer.  It turned out to be possibly the most popular Stevie and the Satellites song ever.  Lots of on-air requests and many other Maryland and DC radio stations contacted us for a copy. In an article about it in the Baltimore Sun, the governor’s people called it mean spirited.  We called it all in good fun. Our yearly albums of parody songs were sold for charity and the album the Schaffer song was on was selling a lot!!!  And that’s when Governor Schaffer did a very unlike Governor Schaffer thing.  He had hundreds of photos printed up and sent to us to hand out with each sale.  The photo was of the Governor standing with a reindeer on the Governor’s mansion lawn.
